Visas and Entry Requirements

Many nationalities including all Western European and Arab countries, USA, Australia and New Zealand are able to obtain a one-month single entry visa on arrival at Cairo International airport.

Please note that for other nationalities it is necessary to organise your visa before you travel. It is vital that you check the conditions attached to your particular passport and make the necessary arrangements in advance. All countries require a valid passport (with a minimum 6 months validity). Contact your local embassy, or consulate for the most up-to-date visa requirements, or inquire from Gazef. It is your own responsibility to have the correct travel documentation. Visa requirements for your trip will vary depending on where you are from and where you are going. We keep the following information up to date as far as possible, but rules do change and sometimes without warning. While we provide the following information in good faith, it is vital that you check yourself and understand that you are fully responsible for your own visa requirements.

REGIONAL INFORMATION

Local Currency: The official unit of currency in Egypt is the Egyptian pound (EGP)
Electricity: Egypt uses 220V, 50Hz and plugs are two-pronged rounded.
Language: Arabic (in Egyptian dialect) is the official language of Egypt.

Climate:
The winter months are from October to March and are characterized by cold nights and pleasant days. Summer is from April to September and is characterized by an increasing dry heat and dust. It rains generally only in short bursts in the period from the beginning of November until March.

Money Exchange

The currency used in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP).

ATMs are found within main cities in Egypt and will generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if at all possible as while there is no hard and fast rule, some banks seem to only work with one brand of card. Please note, your bank will change a fee for overseas withdrawals.

Cash is recommended for times when ATMs are not accessible. Euros, British Pounds and US Dollars are all easy to exchange to the Local currency. Please note that you should bring some cash with you for emergency situations but carrying only cash is a high safety risk. ATM card/s and some cash is the ideal mix.

If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 1996, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

As currency exchange rates can fluctuate often we ask that you refer to the following website for daily exchange rates:

What to Pack

What you need to bring depends on the trip you have chosen and the countries or regions you are planning to visit. A Packing List will be sent to you as soon as you book the trip. We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible as your are expected to carry your own luggage. Suitcases are not recommended–most travellers carry a backpack or rolling bag of small to medium size (no XXL ones please!). You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water, cameras and other belongings.

Tipping

It is customary in Egypt to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels. You may do this individually, or your Adventure Leader will offer to collect the money and tip local guides/drivers as a group. Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from USD5-10 per person per day depending on the quality and length of the service; ask your Adventure Leader for specific recommendations based on the circumstances and culture.

Local Dress

In Egypt the dress standard is more conservative than it is in other places. In predominately Muslim countries we ask that you dress respectfully and avoid very short shorts/skirts and singlets/tanktops when visiting mosques or other holy sites.

Transportation

We provide private cars for groups of up to 3 people, Hiace buses for groups of up to 10, and Coaster buses for groups of up to 19.

Visa requirements depend on your nationality. However, as part of the package, we assist you with the visa process through our meet and greet service at the airport, and the visa fees are included.
