Where is Siwa Oasis?
Siwa Oasis is situated around 350 miles from Cairo in the Egyptian desert. It is just 50 km east of the Libyan border, making it a fascinating place to explore.
History & Culture of Siwa Oasis
Siwa Oasis has a deep-rooted history dating back to ancient Egypt and has long been a cultural hub due to its isolation and unique heritage. This oasis was known as the “Oasis of Amun” in ancient times, revered as the site of the Temple of the Oracle of Amun. The temple gained fame when Alexander the Great visited to consult the oracle about his destiny. The people of Siwa have preserved their distinct customs, language, and traditions for centuries, shaped by their Bedouin heritage.
Siwa’s language, Siwi, is a Berber dialect spoken by locals, making it one of the few places in Egypt where Berber culture remains vibrant. Today, visitors can experience authentic Siwan traditions through the oasis’s handicrafts, clothing, and daily practices. The community is known for its hospitality, and many Siwan customs remain unaffected by tourism, adding to the oasis’s authentic charm.
