One Week Egypt Itinerary
Day 1: Cairo – Start Your Adventure
Welcome to Egypt! After arriving in Cairo, your first day will depend on how much energy you have after your flight. If you’re feeling up for some exploration, head to the impressive Citadel of Salah El Din. This beautiful site, located in the heart of Cairo, offers a glimpse into Egypt’s royal past with stunning architecture and well-preserved interiors. You’ll also get a stunning view of the city from above!
Next, dive into the rich history of Islamic Cairo. Wander through narrow streets filled with ancient mosques, bustling markets, and historic buildings. If time allows, visit the Sultan Hassan Mosque or the Al-Rifa’i Mosque, both architectural marvels that will transport you back in time.
Note that for all of the above sights, the visiting hours are typically from around 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. However, these hours can vary, especially during Fridays and religious holidays when access may be restricted. Be sure to check before your visit.
As the evening approaches, make your way to Khan El Khalili, Cairo’s most famous bazaar. Here, you can shop for souvenirs, sip on a traditional mint tea at El Fishawi Café, and soak in the lively atmosphere. We also recommend you try fiteer, Egyptian pizza, at Fatatry El Hussein. The market comes alive at night, with twinkling lights and vibrant stalls, making it a perfect spot to end your first day in Egypt.
If you’re feeling tired, no worries! You can skip the Citadel and Islamic Cairo and head straight to Khan El Khalili. It’s the perfect introduction to the energy and charm of Cairo. Enjoy some local treats, and prepare for more adventures in the days ahead!

Day 2: Cairo – More to Explore
Start your second day in Cairo with a visit to the iconic Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. These ancient wonders are truly a sight to behold. Snap some photos and take in the awe-inspiring history that surrounds you.
Next, head to the Egyptian Museum, home to countless treasures, including the famous artifacts from King Tutankhamun’s tomb. As you explore, you’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time. Afterward, take a stroll around Tahrir Square, and walk around Downtown, for a feel of the city’s energy.
For lunch, try Egypt’s national dish and local favorite: koshari. It’s a tasty mix of rice, lentils, and pasta. The best place to savor this meal is Koshary Abo Tarek, which happens to be in Downtown as well.
To end the day, take a felucca ride on the Nile during sunset. You can find felucca boats close to downtown, near the Cairo Tower area. There’s also one in front of Fairmont Garden City. As the sun sets, enjoy the peaceful glide along the Nile, taking in the city skyline as it transforms with the evening light. This serene experience is the perfect way to end your day.
Day 3: Luxor – Explore Ancient Temples
Travel to Luxor either by plane or train. If you’re choosing the train, we recommend you take the overnight train to make the most out of your trip, as this journey is quite long.
Start your day in Luxor by exploring Karnak Temple, the largest religious complex ever built. Wander through its towering columns and vast courtyards, and be sure to visit the Sacred Lake and the impressive Hypostyle Hall. It’s a site that truly showcases the grandeur of ancient Egyptian architecture.
Next, head to Luxor Temple, famous for its impressive avenue of sphinxes. This temple is particularly stunning at dusk when it’s beautifully lit, adding to the mystical atmosphere. Take your time exploring the temple grounds and soaking in the history.
Afterward, visit a Fragrance Shop nearby, where you can discover traditional Egyptian scents and oils. Learn about the ancient art of perfume-making and pick up a unique souvenir to take home.
Finally, end your day with a relaxing Hantoor Ride through the streets of Luxor. This traditional horse-drawn carriage ride offers a charming way to see the city and immerse yourself in the local culture. As you ride, you’ll get a glimpse of daily life in Luxor, making it a memorable way to wrap up your day.

After your aerial adventure, visit the Hatshepsut Temple. Built into towering cliffs, this mortuary temple is dedicated to one of Egypt’s few female pharaohs. Take your time exploring the terraces and learning about Hatshepsut’s fascinating reign.
Next, discover the Tombs of the Nobles. These tombs may be lesser-known than those in the Valley of the Kings, but they offer a more intimate look at ancient Egyptian life, with intricate paintings depicting daily activities and scenes from the afterlife.
Continue your journey to the famous Valley of the Kings, the burial place of many Pharaohs. Explore the elaborately decorated tombs, including the legendary tomb of Tutankhamun. Each tomb has its own unique artwork and atmosphere, making this visit a highlight of your trip.
Wrap up your day by visiting the Alabaster Factory, where you can see traditional alabaster carving techniques in action. Learn about this ancient craft and perhaps take home a hand-carved souvenir as a reminder of your time in Luxor.

After boarding your boat, sail across the sparkling sea and reach your island destination. Spend your day swimming, snorkeling, or simply lounging on the white sandy beaches. The clear waters are perfect for exploring the vibrant marine life and colorful coral reefs.
Day 7: Cairo – Wrap Up Your Trip
Wrap up your Egyptian adventure by returning to Cairo from Hurghada. Choose between a flight for a quicker trip or a bus ride for a more scenic journey.
If your flight is later in the day, you might have some extra time to explore Cairo. Use this opportunity to revisit any sights you missed on your first day. Consider exploring additional landmarks, enjoying a relaxing stroll, or indulging in some last-minute shopping.
If you’re heading straight to the airport, make sure you’ve gathered all your souvenirs and cherished memories. Safe travels and farewell to Egypt!
Best Time for this Egypt Itinerary
The best time to visit Egypt for this itinerary is from October to April. During these months, the weather is cooler and more comfortable. This makes it easier to explore both the cities and outdoor sites. Moreover, it is comfortable enough to swim in the Red Sea if you’re used to cooler water. Summer can be very hot, especially in southern areas like Luxor. You can check out this guide for more detailed breakdown on what to do in Egypt for each season.
Visa Information
Most travelers need a visa to enter Egypt. You can get a tourist visa at the airport when you arrive or apply for an e-visa online before your trip. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned departure.
Transportation Tips
Getting Around: In Cairo, use ride-hailing apps such as Uber to get around. For traveling between cities, you can fly or take the train. In Luxor and Hurghada, taxis and guided tours are good options. You can also arrange for private transfers with your hotel/resort. Beware of tourist scams.
Extra Travel Tips
- Dress Modestly: Wear modest clothing, especially when visiting religious sites, to respect local customs.
- Stay Hydrated: Egypt can be hot and dry, so drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
